Gemau Cymru - the importance of volunteers, by Rhodri Jones

Gemau Cymru is a bilingual event for young people on the sporting calendar in Wales, improving the performance pathway for Olympic, Commonwealth and Paralympic sports. Rhodri Jones, Urdd Gobaith Cymru’s National Sports Coordinator, is responsible for managing the army of volunteers in the games. Here’s Rhodri to explain how important they are.

Gemau Cymru is a multi-sport festival for the young people of Wales. The games are held on 1-3 July 2016 in various locations across Cardiff. Gemau Cymru focuses on a variety of competitive elements. Each sport is supported by its relevant Governing Body and follow its structure as regards to the selection process and the age of the competitors. These are the sports that will be part of the games in 2016:

• Athletics
• Gymnastics
• Judo
• Netball
• Indoor Rowing
• Rugby 7 a side
• Table Tennis
• Triathlon
• Weightlifting
• Hockey
• Canoeing

More than a 1,000 competitors are invited to compete in Gemau Cymru and the selection process is in line with the relevant Governing Body’s process. All competitors receive an invitation pack that contains all the necessary information.

Gemau Cymru volunteers are an important part of the games and are give opportunities to undertake many roles, assisting Gemau Cymru staff and the judges and officers etc. More than a 100 volunteers will help during the weekend and each and every volunteer is essential in order to ensure that the event is a success and that everything runs smoothly.

We recruit volunteers for Gemau Cymru by working with Sport Cardiff. Sport Cardiff uses its wide network to inform people of the opportunities and many Twitter posts are shared. This will attract volunteers from various age ranges.
To ensure that all volunteers have a special experience, we’ve organised two nights so that the various Governing Bodies, and us as organisers, can get to know the volunteers before the weekend. Additional training will be provided for the volunteers, as required. All volunteers receive the Gemau Cymru kit and food on the day. There is even a bus organised, to transport the volunteers assisting with the Triathlon!!

After the event, many of our volunteers go on to volunteer further with Sport Cardiff.

We’ve also seen a number of people returning year after year to volunteer in Gemau Cymru.
